Project Portfolio (Cont.)Cast-in-Place Span-by-SpanOrwell River Bridge, Ipswich, England Contractor: Volker Stevin A fully-automatic self-launching formwork gantry used for quarter-point to quarter-point construction of 292 ft spans. Due to the unusual shape and width of the top of the piers, it was not possible to fold down individual panels of the soffit form during launching. Consequently, the entire gantry had to be split longitudinally and the outer section including the soffit form was moved outwards clear of the piers. The strut-and-bowstring assemblies were hydraulically raised, lowered and restressed for launching and allowed the two sides of the gantry to be independently deflected to achieve transitional superelevation. Tsuen-Wan By-Pass, Hong Kong Contractor: Paul Y This fully-automatic self-launching gantry enabled two 131 ft spans to be poured from one position. The soffit form was hydraulically lowered and raised in 10 ft long panels for launching. Innovative hydraulic wedges were used to strike the formwork. High Speed Rail Project, Kimchon, South Korea Contractor: Daewoo Similar to the previous gantry, it also featured hydraulically operated soffit panels and hydraulic wedges but, being a high speed rail project, the deck section was extremely heavy.
